Interior design moves in longer cycles than fashion, but it does move. Looking back at the homes completed in 2024, certain directions stand out, shifts that reflect broader cultural movements around comfort, authenticity, and the relationship between architecture and daily life.
Warm Neutrals Replace Cool Minimalism
The cool, grey-dominated palette that characterised a decade of luxury interiors gave way decisively to warmer tones in 2024. Warm whites, travertine beige, terracotta, and muted olive replaced the cooler greys and whites that had dominated. This shift reflects a broader desire for interiors that feel genuinely welcoming rather than photographically perfect, spaces that read as warm and human rather than clinical and aspirational.
In practice, this means wall colours with yellow or pink undertones, natural stone in honey and buff rather than stark grey, and timber species with warm grain, oak, American walnut, spotted gum, in preference to the bleached blonde timbers of recent years.
Texture as the Primary Design Tool
Where the previous design cycle emphasised smooth, flat surfaces and material purity, 2024 interiors embraced texture as a central design strategy. Fluted panels on joinery and walls, tactile plaster finishes (Venetian plaster, limewash, micro-cement), handmade ceramic tiles with visible variation, and stone with honed or bush-hammered rather than polished surfaces all featured prominently.
The appeal is intuitive, textured surfaces engage the senses, create visual depth, and respond beautifully to changing light conditions throughout the day. They also age well, developing character rather than showing wear.
The Bathroom as a Sanctuary
The bathroom brief expanded significantly in 2024. Where once a 'luxury bathroom' meant a large shower, a freestanding bath, and quality fittings, clients now want rooms designed with the deliberateness of a spa retreat. Heated floors, integrated steam rooms, towel warming drawers, natural stone from floor to ceiling, carefully positioned task lighting and ambient lighting controlled separately, these are now standard elements in a high-end bathroom brief.
The freestanding bath has cemented its position as the centrepiece of principal bathrooms, but selection has become more considered. Stone baths, cast iron, and architectural concrete all appeared alongside the familiar acrylic formats. Placement is architectural: positioned to catch a garden view, or beneath a skylight, or dramatically within a stone-clad niche.
Biophilic Design Embedded in Architecture
The connection to nature moved beyond pot plants and green walls in 2024. Biophilic design in the homes we completed that year was embedded architecturally, internal courtyards that bring sky and greenery into the centre of the plan, full-height glazing that makes garden views a constant presence in everyday spaces, and natural materials that bring the outdoors in through sensory quality rather than botanical references.
Timber ceiling linings, stone feature walls, living moss panels, and water features visible from living spaces all appeared in projects completed during the year.
Kitchen Design: Back to Substance
Kitchen design in 2024 moved decisively away from 'Instagram kitchens', spaces designed to photograph beautifully but function indifferently, toward kitchens that work as hard as they look. Deeper bench depths, properly proportioned appliance recesses, integrated pantry systems with full-height storage, and professional-grade cooking equipment all featured in the briefs of clients who actually cook.
Stone benchtop selection became more adventurous, bookmatched marble, quartzite with dramatic veining, and sintered stone in large formats all appeared alongside the ever-reliable engineered quartz. The visual drama of the stone itself became the dominant design statement, reducing the need for other decorative elements in the kitchen.
Looking Forward
The directions that defined 2024 show no sign of reversing in 2025. The deeper theme, an embrace of authenticity, quality, and enduring design over trend-driven novelty, aligns well with what Varcon has always built. These are homes designed to be lived in deeply and loved for decades.
